Firefox 3.03 Is Out !!!

What a surprise. Only two days after releasing Firefox 3.02 the Mozilla firefox team released the new version Firefox 3.03 which is usually a sign of a serious bug in the previous version. The bug made it impossible for some users to retrieve saved passwords or to save new passwords. A serious problem for everyone who used the Firefox Password Manager to store passwords in the web browser.

The new version of Firefox is currently distributed to all official mirror servers. The process is currently still underway. One of the mirrors that has already been updated is the ISC San Francisco mirror.

Internet Connection Multicasting With Your Friends Pc’s

As I mentioned in my earlier post that we can enable our car WiFi by 2 means.

(i) Using Laptop as and enabler to internet connection.

(ii) Using Single board computer in place of Laptop as internet connection enabler.

The main advantage by using Laptop is we can even avoid router(Access Point) by configuring the machine to a point to point wifi access. The disadvantage is we need to carry laptop every time for internet connection.

The advantage of using SBC in place of laptop rule out the disadvantage of (i). We need to buy an SBC to make car wifi enabled which cost around $120.

I am mentioning simple and easiest method that is method (i) now. For this we need to configure our laptop for point to point wifi access. The main advantage of using method (i) is we can avoid access point(AP).

The figure above shows the architecture diagram of our simplest wifi car. The EVDO is connected to the first wireless laptop which will serves internet to other system(s) using point to point network. I will explain the step to step procedure now.

Click on the Network connection in control panel(Start menu->Control Panel->Network and Internet Connections->Network connections).

On the properties window click on the wireless network tab and Add a new connection.

Add a name for the network let it be “MyHomeNetwork” and make the authentication as shown in the figure above. You can add a password which can be used to secure your network. The main and ultimate thing is that you need to change your wireless network as adhoc(point to point) network by checking the check box shown in figure above. Click OK to save the settings. Yeah your system is ready to work as point to point wireless serving device and also a gateway for internet. Connect EVDO driver program to get internet connection.

Carry the system you configured now for getting internet connection in your car.

Your Peer system(s) can be connect to this network. Search for wireless network you can see a wireless network named “MyHomeNetwork”. Connect to the network with key assigned during the process.

My next post will describe the way to make your car wifi using Single board computer. Which is more promising WiFi car.

If you see this process in your system, beware it is a trojan. But the main problem is it will not be list in task manager or Close Program window (CTRL+ALT+DEL). But this application is listed in startup application, thats why we didn’t notice the program much.

xeeber.com tells you the status of the user whether its online, offline or invisible. Being in invisible mode on yahoo has been a handy thing which will no more be the case. Not sure how accurate is this site but I did little bit testing and it seems to do a decent job.Looks like no matter how many locks you make , someone will make the key. softwares like buddyspy that do that the same thing but I would expect people to be lazy enough to download the software to check the online status of their buddies.

Google Reader Notifier for Windows is a system tray based application that lets you know when you have new unread items. This lets you to find out when the blogs you have subscribed gets updated. The utility requires .Net framework for functioning.

Installation

Unzip and run the setup program.
Launch the application and right click the icon to select Preferences.
Enter your Google username and password and click OK.
Click the Check Now to test it out.

Firefox 3.02 Final

Mozilla started distributing the final version of Firefox 3.02 to various major and minor mirror sites. This is the usual process before they release the notification on the homepage about the new version. The Check for Updates feature will show the new version usually 0-24 hours later.

Firefox users who cannot wait can head straight to the main list of Firefox mirror sites and pick a mirror next to their location to download the latest official version of Firefox.

Download Squad reported that it is a beta release that got released today but this is obviously not true since Firefox 3.02 is available in the Firefox release directory of the Mozilla ftp site which indicates that this is the final version and not a beta release.

VLC media player 0.9.2 released

The popular open source media player, VLC media player version 0.9.2 is released. Code named Grishenko this new release brings lot of new functionality and brings a new interface for Windows and Linux.

What’s Cool in this release, currently 0.9.2 release notes page is not available because of the high traffic, you can veiw 0.9.0 page.

For video playback, new protocols, new codecs, new demuxers and many bug-fixes have been added to support more formats.

For audio playback, cover art and metadata support (and editing) have been vastly enhanced. It can play audio when the playback speed is changed.

For the developers, libVLC has been simplified and improved, many bindings for many languages were added and there is a new Mac OS X Framework.
Scripts written in lua can expand VLC media player’s capabilities (read Youtube, Dailymotion URLs, fetch meta-data…)

VLC now has better support for .flv files, the earlier versions supported flv but they never allowed to skip ahead, so if you have a long file you need to see the entire file, you can’t skip, if you do it used to close immediately. This version allows you to skip ahead while playing a flash file.

Google said it will work hard to make sure its add-on paradigm keeps Chrome stable, unlike add-ons for Mozilla’s Firefox and Microsoft’s Internet Explorer.

“There’s two different kinds of add-ons,” Vafai said. “The Firefox things extend your browser, so to speak, and then there are user scripts. We intend to do both of those in Google Chrome.” Greasemonkey’s founder, Aaron Boodman, actually works on the Google Chrome team.

Adobe AIR is a great platform for accessing Web Apps from your desktop, there are some great Adobe AIR applications are out there and the list is growing. Google web apps are so popular that everyone uses at least some of them, the list includes Gmail, Google Docs, Google Reader, Google Calendar, Google Maps etc, but there is no way to access these apps from your desktop so far.

Mozilla Unleashes TraceMonkey For Firefox

In a move to make Firefox more competitive with desktop applications and proprietary graphics technology like Microsoft Silverlight and Adobe Flash, Mozilla on Friday released TraceMonkey, a project that adds native code compilation to SpiderMonkey, Mozilla’s JavaScript engine.

Mozilla has included TraceMonkey in an alpha version of Firefox 3.1, the next major release of the open source Firefox Web browser. TraceMonkey is off by default, because it’s not entirely bug-free. But when it’s more stable and enabled, Firefox’s JavaScript should get faster “by an order of magnitude or more,” as Mozilla CTO Brendan Eich put it in a blog post.
