VLC media player 0.9.2 released

The popular open source media player, VLC media player version 0.9.2 is released. Code named Grishenko this new release brings lot of new functionality and brings a new interface for Windows and Linux.

What’s Cool in this release, currently 0.9.2 release notes page is not available because of the high traffic, you can veiw 0.9.0 page.

For video playback, new protocols, new codecs, new demuxers and many bug-fixes have been added to support more formats.

For audio playback, cover art and metadata support (and editing) have been vastly enhanced. It can play audio when the playback speed is changed.

For the developers, libVLC has been simplified and improved, many bindings for many languages were added and there is a new Mac OS X Framework.
Scripts written in lua can expand VLC media player’s capabilities (read Youtube, Dailymotion URLs, fetch meta-data…)

VLC now has better support for .flv files, the earlier versions supported flv but they never allowed to skip ahead, so if you have a long file you need to see the entire file, you can’t skip, if you do it used to close immediately. This version allows you to skip ahead while playing a flash file.

Google said it will work hard to make sure its add-on paradigm keeps Chrome stable, unlike add-ons for Mozilla’s Firefox and Microsoft’s Internet Explorer.
“There’s two different kinds of add-ons,” Vafai said. “The Firefox things extend your browser, so to speak, and then there are user scripts. We intend to do both of those in Google Chrome.” Greasemonkey’s founder, Aaron Boodman, actually works on the Google Chrome team.

Adobe AIR is a great platform for accessing Web Apps from your desktop, there are some great Adobe AIR applications are out there and the list is growing. Google web apps are so popular that everyone uses at least some of them, the list includes Gmail, Google Docs, Google Reader, Google Calendar, Google Maps etc, but there is no way to access these apps from your desktop so far.

Adobe AIR :Web 2.0 Icon Generator

Icon Generator is a little application that lets you generate a CS3 or Web 2.0 style icon, only 3 step- Pick color, type characters and click Create Icon. It allows you to create just create 4 different sizes of the icon. Icon Generator is based on Adobe AIR apps, so you will need Adobe AIR Runtime to install it.

Mozilla Unleashes TraceMonkey For Firefox

In a move to make Firefox more competitive with desktop applications and proprietary graphics technology like Microsoft Silverlight and Adobe Flash, Mozilla on Friday released TraceMonkey, a project that adds native code compilation to SpiderMonkey, Mozilla’s JavaScript engine.

Mozilla has included TraceMonkey in an alpha version of Firefox 3.1, the next major release of the open source Firefox Web browser. TraceMonkey is off by default, because it’s not entirely bug-free. But when it’s more stable and enabled, Firefox’s JavaScript should get faster “by an order of magnitude or more,” as Mozilla CTO Brendan Eich put it in a blog post.
